Puppy HeadStart (check calendar)
Puppies are like wet clay, waiting to be shaped. Like clay, you need to work with the puppy early on or he will become “set in his ways.” Recent research has shown that the critical periods for a puppy’s mental development occur before 16 weeks of age. Puppies are learning every minute, with or without our influence. The trick is to provide an environment to make learning good manners easy and learning inappropriate behavior difficult. Legacy’s S.O.C.I.A.L. puppy program makes sure you don’t miss the critical windows of opportunity. Exercises from each of these six important topics will be presented during each 30 minute Puppy HeadStart Class:
S-Strange Surroundings
O-Opportunity for Training Good Manners
C-Care and Handling
I-Interesting Stuff to Explore
A-Associate with Nice Dogs and People
L-Living Happily Together
This class is free with paid registration for Pet Dog Manners. If you’d like to attend Puppy HeadStart, please discuss your plans with your veterinarian. Puppies between eight and sixteen weeks of age and their familes are eligible to attend. To register please contact the Legacy office at 360-683-1522 or email info@legacycanine.com. -
Pet Dog Manners (PDM) (check calendar)
The goal of this class is to establish a mutual bond and appropriate relationship between families and the dogs living with them. Using methods based on positive reinforcement, we will teach you how to communicate with your dog. Our Pet Dog Manners class, for adolescents and adults (16 weeks of age and older) begins with a 90 minute orientation for humans only. We encourage you to bring your family. Attendance at orientation is mandatory. At the orientation you will receive a detailed illustratedhandbook written by Terry Ryan describing the mechanics and practical application of each exercise. The remaining seven classes will meet once a week for 50 minutes. We teach attention, walking nicely on leash, come when called, sit, and down, and then put them together into useful real life applications. For example, one of our exercises is called "Pizza Delivery". You'll learn how to teach your dog to sit and stay when the doorbell rings and a pizza is delivered. Pet Dog Manners class is the foundation and launching pad for all of our continuing education courses.
$120. 8 sessions.

Home Alone - Help for the Latchkey Dog
When left home alone, some dogs act out in troublesome ways. You might come home to discover your furniture chewed on or your door scratched. Perhaps your dog had diarrhea or his mouth and coat are wet from stress panting and drooling. A generalized term for this type of behavior is the Latchkey Dog Syndrome. The dog is not doing this to get even with you for leaving him alone. His actions are a reaction to his environment. This type of behavior can be prevented or improved. Find out more by attending the Home Alone workshop.
-
Barking
It's normal for dogs to bark. Barking too much, too loudly, or at the wrong times is a problem, for the dog and for those nearby. Determining why your dog barks is the first step to problem solving. Find out more about inappropriate barking and how to prevent or decrease this behavior at the Barking workshop.

The Toolbox

Team Teaching
You, your dog and a Legacy instructor make up the "team". Team Teaching provides more support than a group class can offer. Your dog's temperament, your own physical ability and/or scheduling difficulties can more appropriately be addressed in Team Teaching. Legacy provides one-on-one instruction in the Pet Dog Manners exercises. An instructor will help train the dog, but will then transfer the skills to you. Some clients take Team Teaching and Pet Dog Manners at the same time, automatic help with homework!
The cost for three 30 minute sessions is $95.
Behavior Consultations
Behavior Consultations give immediate aid to families with dogs at risk. These private consultations evaluate and profile the dog and the situation. We customize a program to reduce or change the problem behavior. This service is provided by Terry Ryan. In addition, aggression expert Kathy Sdao, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist from Tacoma, sees clients at the Legacy facility once a month. These specialized consultations are $200 for the first 90 minute session. Please contact the Legacy office for more details.
Customized Events
Legacy hosts customized workshops, seminars, camps and tours. These events are designed to meet the individual needs of your group and can vary in length from two days to two weeks. Most of the events take place in Washington State, but can involve instructors from all over the world.
